Bleach: The Story

15 year old Kurosaki Ichigo is not your everyday high school student. He has from as far he can remember always had the ability to see ghosts and spirits. A fateful day arrives as Ichigo encounters the shinigami Kuchiki Rukia, who saves him and his family from a Hollow at the cost of injuring herself. During this encounter, with Rukia unable to defeat the hollow she transfers her shinigami powers into Ichigo. In the aftermath, unable to continue with her job, Rukia allows Ichigo to take on the role of a shinigami in her place as they together defeat the Hollows plaguing Ichigo’s town.

So starts the gut-wrenching adventures of Ichigo as he contends with Hollows and the shinigami who have come to collect Rukia to take her back to Soul Society. Beaten by Captain Kuchiki (Rukia's brother by adoption) and his Vice-Captain Renji Abarai, a childhood friend of Rukia's, and left in humiliation, Ichigo follows Rukia back to Soul Society where she is being tried by the elders for her crime of transferring her powers to a Living person.

With him is his school friend Orihime, and two other friends, Chad, and Uryu, a Quincy. Although Uryu despises Ichigo and all Soul Reapers for the shinigamis' role in exterminating his suprahuman race, he vows to help rescue Rukia from what has become a death sentence. Once in Soul Society, Uryu, Chad, and Orihime -- with the aid of a sometimes Cat -- use their wits to avoid or beat the Gotei 13 captains they encounter.

Ichigo beats Ikkaku, scrapes by with a win against Captain Zaraki, a notoriously large and powerful shinigami known for his brute strength, and then encounters resistance among the other Soul Reapers. Chad, Uryu, and even Orihime weather their own battles against the shinigami they engage as they race to save Rukia from a suspiciously harsh death sentence for her crime. Ichigo faces off against Renji again in a battle that leaves Renji barely alive (for a shinigami) and Ichigo seriously injured; however, Ichigo comes away from the bloody battle realizing he and Renji both want to save Rukia's life.

At the public execution hill, Rukia awaits death, only to have another unassuming and apparently likable captain, Sousuke Aizen, reveal that he and his followers, Captains Ichimaru and Tousen, have been plotting treason against Soul Society using Rukia's sentencing as a catalyst to greater power. These three use the confusion and Living invaders to escape to another realm of afterlife existence known as Hueco Mundo, a dangerous world of Hollows.

In the fragmented Soul Society after Aizen's departure, the shinigami attempt to make sense of the traitors and regroup for the coming Winter War Aizen has planned.

Raising an elite army of ten Arrancar called the Espada in Hueco Mundo, Aizen, Ichimaru, and Tousen oust the current leader of the Hollows and take control...
