This is, however, easier said than done.
Becoming the Pirate King entails sailing to the legendarily dangerous waters of the Grand Line, battling the unspeakably strong
humans and creatures that live there, and seizing Gold Roger's priceless treasure, the One Piece for himself. While Luffy might be naive to so voraciously go after such a daunting achievement, he's smart enough to know that he can't do it alone. So, at seventeen-years-old, he sets out to gather up his own crew to set sail for the Grand Line. First up is swordsman Roronoa Zoro, the famous pirate-hunter whom Luffy frees from the clutches of the evil Marines, who are about to execute him. Next is Nami, the thief-turned-navigator, who seemingly betrays Luffy several times before officially affiliating herself with Luffy and his crew. Add in Usopp, the cowardly liar who's deadly with a slingshot, and chef-de-cuisine Sanji, who's dangerously effective when using his legs as a weapon, and you've got a ragtag crew of epic proportions. But is it enough to help Luffy achieve his goal of becoming the Pirate King? Only time will tell. -- RG
The Grand Line, also known as the Graveyard of Pirates, is a fictional sea and the setting for most of the story in One Piece. It follows an imaginary line that runs north-west to south-east around the world and perpendicular to the Red Line. The Red Line is a stretch of land that circles the globe from south-west to north-east. These two Lines divide the two oceans of the world into four seas: North Blue, East Blue, West Blue and South Blue. There are two Calm Belts, running north and south of the Grand Line. These areas experience almost no wind and ocean currents. The Calm Belts are also breeding ground for huge sea monsters, called Sea Kings in the One Piece world. They are very effective barriers for those trying to enter the Grand Line. Navigation in the Grand Line is considered to be very difficult. Compasses do not work on the Grand Line because of the nature of its magnetic fields. The islands located in the Grand Line are highly rich in minerals which disturbs the magnetic fields in the area. In order to navigate the Grand Line, a Log Pose, a compass like instrument, must be used. The Log Pose works by locking on to one island's magnetic field and then, once the island is reached, adapting to the next island's magnetic field. Devil Fruits are a type of fruit which, when eaten, permanently give a special power. There are three categories of Devil Fruit. Zoan fruits allow the user to fully and partially transform into a specific animal. Logia fruits give control over and allow the user "to change their living body structure into the powers of nature". "Everything aside from those is lumped into the Paramecia category." Devil Fruit users can not swim. When even only partially submerged in water, they can't actively use their powers and they temporarily lose their strength. About the Creator:
As a child, Eiichiro Oda was inspired by vikings and aspired to become a manga artist. At the age of 17, he submitted his work "Wanted!" and
won several awards, including second place in the coveted Tezuka Award.
That got him into a job at the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where he originally worked as assistant to Shinobu Kaitani's
series Suizan Police Gang before moving to Masaya Tokuhiro on
Jungle Kin Tar-chan and Mizu no Tomodachi Kappaman, which gave him an unexpected influence on his artistic style.
At the age of 19, he worked as an assistant to Nobuhiro
Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin, before winning the Hop Step Award for new artists. During this
time, he drew two pirate-themed one-shot stories, called "Romance Dawn",
which would debut in Monthly and Weekly Jump in late 1996-early 1997. In 1997, One Piece appeared for
the first time in Weekly Shonen Jump and promptly became one of the most popular manga in Japan. His biggest influence
is Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump.
They have also made a one-shot called Cross Epoch, a crossover containing characters from both Dragon Ball and One Piece.
